This serves as a reminder that we cannot out even a basic amount of trust in commonly used computer platforms. This is where the RISC-V instruction set and processors become super interesting!

RISC-V and ARM are built on similar ideas, a reduced and vastly simplified instruction set. But RISC-V is fully open source! Lots of interesting developments in this space in recent years. riscv.org/

The recent vulnerability in Intel’s SGX enclave is really bad. Anyone who knew about this vulnerability (or backdoor?) could peek into the “randomness” of the CPU and dramatically increase their chances of breaking any sort of cryptography done by the CPU. arstechnica.com/information-te

The vulnerability was only discovered thanks to months of trying to reverse engineer the Intel microcode and could have been detected or prevented should the instruction set have been open source.
